Marianne Penberthy was born in Queensland and moved to Western Australia in the early seventies. She studied Art and Design at Central West College in Geraldton before gaining a BA (Visual Arts) from Edith Cowan University in Perth in 1995.

Marianne has held three solo exhibitions in Geraldton and participated in numerous group exhibitions in Australia and overseas. She is a regular participant in a number of Australia’s well known textile awards and exhibitions, including the Western Australian biannual Stitched and Bound and Expressions: The National Wool Quilt Prize, Geelong, Victoria. She has also been a selected artist in the Tamworth Fibre Textile Biennial.

In 2011 she was part of the Textile Exchange Program between West Australian and Japanese textile artists in Hyogo Japan. Marianne was invited to particiapte in The International Bojagi and Beyond in San Francisco, USA in 2011 and Seoul, Korea in 2012.

Her work covers a broad range of textile media and concepts. Responding to materials, technique or restoring the remnant to whole cloth is often the beginning of an investigation. However, explorations into the emotional connections relating to land, residue from memory, and family and her sense of place remain central to her art practice.
